Data Analysis and Reporting
Timely access to key surgical metrics is a cornerstone of the ACS NSQIP. From the semiannual and online reports produced by the program, a participating medical center can derive an accurate picture of its performance across any date range and against national averages.
Semiannual Reports
The semiannual reports are comprehensive in nature and are designed to compare a site's risk-adjusted surgical outcomes to other (blinded) participating centers on an overall basis, as well as by subspecialty. Included in the semiannual report is a participating site's O/E ratio for the previous 12-month period.
An O/E ratio is a mathematical construct accurately showing the risk-adjusted outcome for a specific site. The numerator, 'O', represents the total number of observed events of postoperative occurrences (deaths or complications), and the denominator, 'E', represents the number of events that are expected on the basis of the compendium of the preoperative risk factors prevalent in that population. If the O/E ratio and the upper bound of the O/E confidence interval is <1.0, the hospital's outcomes are statistically better than expected. Thus, the hospital's outcomes are “Exemplary.” If the O/E ratio and the lower bound of the O/E confidence interval is >1.0, the hospital's outcomes are statistically worse than expected. Thus, the hospital's outcomes “Need Improvement.”
Online Reports
Updated in real-time, online reports offer instant feedback on a site's performance, as well as comparative assessments vs. blinded national data.
A site may set the parameters for a report to view data for any date range and by subspecialty or specific procedures. The comparison data can also be stratified by type of medical center (academic, community) or by bed size.
Ten reports are available to sites 24/7. There are numerous report formats from which sites can choose for each report. Sign-up for a Webinar or request a PowerPoint presentation for more detailed information on the following reports:
